Whatever You Are, Be a Good One...

Happy almost weekend!

It's a sunny Thursday, does this mean spring is really here? I live in MN, I won't get my hopes up.

5 hours, 2 coffees, 4 online applications and one capstone later, I decided I can reward myself and finally go home, but first I decided to give an update! Applications are in for a few districts in the Twin Cities, up in Fargo/Moorhead, and I started my apps for Arizona. Next, I'll have to start checking out the Denver area. So many of my friends are finishing up their student teaching today, it's crazy to think that we're all actually done!  I'm ready to be Ms. Rath...and have it be official!

Today I am thankful for iced coffee, Brooke Fraser on GrooveShark, and the people who love me.

Also, here is a quote my wonderful friend Alissa shared with me today, and of course, I loved it.
"Risk, Forgive, Laugh and Love to Live"

Happy Thursday <3

Once a Dragon...Always a Dragon

I'm burning some time at my favorite coffee shop, Moxie Java before I have dinner with my wonderful friend Ellie. It's good to be back here, sitting in the comfy chairs. I forgot how much I've missed my skim iced mochas and the atmosphere of this place :) I came to visit Moorhead this weekend, and it is bizarre being back. I am super excited to catch up with people, and see friends that I haven't seen for a few months. I had a coffee date today, and tomorrow is full of hanging out with different people and then spending the night with the ladies who I started out with here, Lillie and Marnie. It's strange being back though, because everything seems completely the same. The buildings on campus have been renovated a little bit, but that's about it.  I've moved away for the past 3 months and had a life changing experience. I've missed the people in Moorhead, but being back makes me realize it was the best decision I've ever made to student teach abroad. I needed a perspective shift, I needed an adventure. Not to say that picking up my cap and gown today wasn't bittersweet, because I realized that I'm not coming back here. My time in this area is really done..at least for now(maybe I'll get a job..hopefully not, I'd rather NOT live in flood trundra for the next few years!)

Time will tell where I am heading next, and I pray continually to be open to where I am being called to go. Tonight it's my favorite mexican resaturant Juano's, and tomorrow is one last time on the downtown strip ;)  As strange as it is to be back, I know that I've called this place home for the last 5 years  for a reason, some things just never change. Once a dragon, always a dragon...right?

Freshman year with Lillie and Marnie at the Power Bowl game against Concordia:)

5 years later...on homecoming court at the homecoming game :)

Sometimes lack of productivity is good a girl..

So today has been officially unproductive. But sometimes lack of productivity is good for a girl, PLUS...just think of all the creative inspiration I came across online shopping, looking at Etsy, Pinterest and using StumbleUpon. These are some of my favorite things I came across today :) Hope they make you smile, especially the last one!

Back State side

Well, I'm back safe and sound. After 24 hours of traveling, I've rested yet still not back to a normal schedule. I can tell the jet lag is hitting me hard, as well as American food since I've been sick since I've gotten home. This upcoming weekend I'm heading to my cabin with my family, so I think that will be really good for me. Then operation, "find a job" will be in full swing starting Monday!

The last few days of school were great, and the kids threw me the best (almost) surprise party ever. I even had cupcakes with my name on each one :) Then I was off to Zanzibar with my friend Erik, and we had a blast. We hung out in Stone Town for 2 days checking out the architecture, great restaurants and crazy streets. Then we headed for the beach on the north shore of the island where I have never witnessed such a beautiful place. We went scuba diving, laid on the beach, drank plenty of cocktails and just relaxed. A perfect way to end my time in Africa.

Here are some pictures to sum up the last few days...first the party that the kids threw me, and then Zanzibar :)
All the treats the kids made me :) Even a cake in the shape of a heart!

The kiddos reading the "thank you" cards I wrote them each

Lining up for treats!

Cupcakes with my name on them! :)

Singing the song they wrote me...best thing ever.

Tearing up, as the kids had me open the letters they wrote me and shirt they signed for me

Stone Town

First drink on the beach...please note the awesome yellow sunglasses purchased for 10,000tsh in Stone Town. ;) Best. Purchase. Ever.

Erik in the ocean!

The sand was unbelievable

Gotta love the ocean :)

Scuba Diving time!

I was a little scared...

:) Ready to go!

Post scuba Fanta on the beach..much needed.

The sunsets were breathtaking...

:)

So strange to think that 5 days ago I was scuba diving in the Indian Ocean. Now..it's 50  degrees outside.

Operation Find a Job needs to begin asap.

Take the road less traveled...

Tarangire Safari Lodge at Tarangire National Park in Tanzania is by far my new favorite place in the world. The gorgeous lodge sits on top of a bluff looking down into the National Park along the main river that runs through the area. In dry season, the river is the main source of water for animals and so while sitting in the relaxing, comfortable chairs drinking mango juice, you're able to see zebra, giraffe, hundreds of elephants, big cats drinking water and hunting, gazelle and countless other animals. In the wet season, you can still see many animals (in fact, I just watched a herd of elephant cross the river) but the concentration of animals is more spread out because there are more places they can get water from. Although not as many animals are in the one place, the land is green as far as the eye can see and is honestly one of the most breathtaking places I've ever seen.

We stayed in "tents" which had 2 beds, a bathroom and shower in them. My kind of roughing it :) We drove down here with a fellow teacher, John Lane who is pretty great, and reminds me of my brother so it was a fun weekend. We all just hung out at night, and during the day either relaxed or went on game drives. Robert Frost's quote "When two roads diverge, take the road less traveled" definitely rang true for us as we off roaded in Lane's rent-a-landrover to crazy, loosely traveled paths through the park to have some insane elephant encounters. We were within 20 meters (as close as 4 meters at times) to a herd of around 40 elephants in one of those encounters. At one point, the male bull who was alone on the opposite side of the road from the rest of the herd, turned towards us, trumpeted his trunk and postured like he was ready to charge. He was obviously not happy that we were so close to the rest of his herd, in addition to the 4-5 baby elephants running around (which are the cutest things I've ever seen). We witnessed teenage elephants rough-housing and wrestling with their trunks, baby elephants following their mothers, elephants using their trunks to break apart branches and almost got ran over by the giant bull.

Having the opportunity to make it to this lodge has been fantastic. Hearing the sounds, being able to see and smell a safari for one last time while in Africa is amazing. Looking out on this bluff makes me feel so small and at the same time a part of something so much greater. Nature is so immensely huge and intertwined and experiences like this really make me think about my place in this world and what I'm meant to do with the next 60 years of it! To look out and see a herd of elephants crossing a river on top of a bluff, while in Africa, I can't help but feel blessed and thankful that I can play a part. It's a serene feeling, and one that as corny as it may sound, but is good for the soul. I feel as if I should have the song "Circle of Life" playing in the background while reading/writing this ;)

I can't think of a way I would have rather spent my second to last weekend in Tanzania and last weekend with Ms. Laura. Only 3 days left before I fly out to Zanzibar to enjoy my last few days in Tanzania, and then back to the states. I say my goodbyes to my kiddos tomorrow since it's their last day of school before the term ends...definitely bittersweet.

If this experience in general has taught me one thing, it's been to take the road less traveled because trudging your own path always makes things a little more interesting :)

 The "tents" we stayed in...
 Drinking sundowners at sunset

 Sunset at the park...

Boabab trees covered the park

Teenage elephants wrestling with each other...

Sunrise over Tarangire

This guy wasn't too happy we were so close!

Majestic
 Baby Tembo!
Tiny Tembo! This little guy was probably only weeks old...you could hardly see him through the grass!

View from our tent...breathtaking.
